Overview of the relations between Brazil and Malaysia

Brazil and Malaysia established diplomatic relations in 1959. The respective Embassies in Kuala Lumpur and Brasília were set up in 1981.

The two countries maintain very friendly relations. Top-level visits (of Heads of State or Government) were paid in 1991, 1992 and 2003 (from Malaysia to Brazil) and in 1995 (from Brazil to Malaysia). Besides that, many official and technical visits have taken place over recent years, in a number of fields. Bilateral agreements on air services, trade relations and partial visa exemption (tourism) are currently in force. Among the points of convergence between the foreign policies of both countries are the defense of multilateralism and the protection of biological diversity.

The economic dimension of the relationship is particularly strong, with the presence of Brazilian companies in Malaysia and Malaysian companies in Brazil. Bilateral trade has reached US$ 3.027 billion in 2016, still below its potential.

Bilateral trade has reached US$ 3.027 billion in 2016, still below its potential. Brazilian main exported products are sugar, corn, cotton, fuels, soybeans, soy oil and meat. On the other hand, Brazil imports from Malaysia mechanical and electrical machines, rubber and rubber gloves, precision instruments, palm oil and plastics.
Brazil and Malaysia are bound by historical links and interesting similarities. The Malay language has many words borrowed from Portuguese, the language spoken in Brazil. The rubber tree, which became very relevant for the Malaysian economy, has its origins in Brazil. The passion for football is another trait that connects the Brazilian and the Malaysian people.
